How do I exhibit?

2D and 3D artists

ArtCare has a temporary exhibition space along the main hospital corridors and regularly programmes individual artists and groups to display 2D artworks in a variety of media. Exhibitions are programmed 12-18 months in advance. There is also an annual Open Exhibition, which takes place in early spring, where local and regional artists can submit up to 5 pieces of work for selection. Submission packs are usually sent out to artists on our mailing list in February and details advertised in local press at that time too. Find out more by downloading our general guidelines for exhibiting 2D artworks at the hospital.

Work experience

GCSE and A-Level students

ArtCare provides opportunities for students interested in art to spend time working with the team gaining an insight into arts in health. Tasks are varied and you can expect to be involved in practical artwork as well as associated administrative tasks.

“Everyone in the ArtCare team has been very supportive and positive… I am happy that I chose to have my work experience here, as it has given me an improved understanding of the ArtCare department and the general workplace. I would definitely recommend applying for a placement here.” Jaye Sheppard, student

Students in Years 10 and 11, as well as A-level and degree students have all been on placements with ArtCare. The duration of placements is normally one week full-time, but other options can be considered. ‘My work experience’ – read one student’s blog post to find out more.

Applications for work experience must be received between Sept-Dec for a placement the following spring. This is to allow all the necessary checks to be carried out and for ArtCare to plan your activities. If you are interested in applying for work experience, please email Jo Jarvis, or write to: Voluntary Services, HR Dept, Salisbury District Hospital, Salisbury, SP2 8BJ

Workshop leaders

Staff Arts Club

ArtCare organises regular artist-led workshops for staff at the hospital allowing them to ‘wind down’ after work. The Staff Arts Club workshops give staff a ‘taster’ of many different visual and performing arts, and activities have included everything from jewellery making and pastels to watercolour painting and singing. The workshops are usually 2 hours long and are held in the early evening. The workshops are booked six months in advance. As a guide workshop leaders are usually paid £80 for the session, plus materials and travel.

As an ArtCare workshop leader you would be expected to:

  • facilitate a workshop in your chosen artform providing staff with support appropriate to each individual
  • bring a range of creative skills and an open mind, encouraging people to explore their ideas
  • create a safe, enjoyable atmosphere respecting individual privacy and confidentiality
  • provide all materials and equipment needed for the workshop

ArtCare will provide an opportunity for you to gain experience and develop your skills in delivering a workshop to adults in a healthcare setting.

You don’t need to have specific qualifications but these are essential:

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • confidence and experience in your chosen artform
  • experience of leading workshops in your chosen artform
  • suitable references ideally including feedback
  • an understanding of Equal Opportunities and Confidentiality

If you are interested in running a Staff Arts Club workshop please email Hazel Stock with your outline for your workshop proposal, details of your previous experience and two references. You may direct us to your website if you have some of this information online already.
